Trees have long been regarded as spiritual beings since humans have been around. There was the tree of knowledge in the bible, and the tree of life is found in many different cultures. Trees represent knowledge, wisdom, strength, grounding, and a connection between heaven and earth. People who recognize this are often made fun of and are called tree huggers. But touching a tree can be very relaxing and healing.
One of the guided meditations that I learned in one my classes was visualizing going inside a tree. Going down the roots into the earth and become grounded to mother earth. Then the next step was to go up the trunk and out the branches to the stems and leaves to reach out to father sky. You could feel the security and the strength of the tree in its roots and trunk and at the same time feel the wind flowing through the leaves and branches and you had a better view of what was around you.
My friend Robert and I often get together and discuss different metaphysical topics. The last time he suggested to try to touch two trees at the same time. That way you can tap into the network of trees that are around. What was amazing is that just recently our pastor also talked about how an aspen forest is actually a large organism. You see many individual trees above ground but underground the roots are connected. The analogy was that we are all individuals, but we are also one community.
I wondered where I could find two trees that were close enough so that I could touch them at the same time. I found many places where I walk, but the best place was where there are trees right behind the bench where I stop and meditate.
Then it occurred to me as I was doing this, which was to do a healing meditation. I thought of the sun’s bright energy being absorbed into the leaves at the top of the two trees and then coming down the branches into the trunks and into my hands and arms. I was being filled by this energy, and it replaced any negative energy, illness, and pain which then flowed back into the trees and down their roots into the earth and was dispersed. I actually felt really good afterwards and I also felt a connection to all of the trees that were there. I now look at trees differently and feel their vibrant positive energy.
If you can’t find two trees close enough together, you can visualize it when you meditate. You can also get two twigs from different trees and even better, hold pieces of sandal wood or palo santo which are known to have powerful metaphysical properties, in each hand as you meditate. Trees are not only spiritual beings but they are also our friends who will help us heal and will help us on our spiritual path.
